Which period products are right for you and why many people are looking for reusable alternatives

Many of us know the feeling: trying out different products until we find something that feels really good – safe, comfortable, and practical for everyday use. In recent years, more and more menstruating people have become interested in period products that last longer and integrate better into their daily routines. The reasons for this are varied: cost, comfort, environmental concerns, or simply the need to find a suitable and reliable solution for their period.
In this article, we'll show you different options – from period underwear to cups or cloth pads – and explain how they work and what you should pay attention to when you're dealing with them.

Disposable products – and why many are looking for alternatives

Many menstruating people use a large number of conventional tampons and sanitary pads over the course of their lives. The exact number varies depending on the source and individual usage. Some sources cite several thousand products – depending on the individual's cycle, flow, or preferences.
But one thing is certain: disposable products are thrown away after use. For many people, this is the point at which they ask themselves whether something reusable would be more practical or pleasant.

Why reusable products work well for many:

  • They need to be repurchased less frequently.
  • many find them gentler or more pleasant.
  • They will accompany you for a longer period of time.

Period underwear – soft, comfortable and suitable for many everyday situations.

Period panties are worn like regular underwear and consist of several layers that absorb fluid and wick it away from the skin. How long a pair of panties can be worn depends on the heaviness of the period and the specific style.
After use, period underwear can be rinsed with cold water and washed according to the care instructions.
Menstrual panties come in different styles and for varying flow levels. For a very heavy period, for example, we recommend our model. JULE holds as much fluid as three tampons. For a normal flow, we have many alternatives for you. Take a look at our LENE or INSA on.

Scent & Well-being

Fresh menstrual fluid usually smells neutral to slightly metallic. An unpleasant odor can develop if blood is in prolonged contact with air and warmth. Everyone quickly develops a sense of how often a change feels comfortable.

Menstrual cup – the flexible companion

Menstrual cups are now available from many manufacturers. They all have in common that the cups are cup-shaped and made of soft material. The cups are inserted into the vagina like a tampon. It usually takes a little practice at first, but after a few tries, the cup fits perfectly.
Menstrual flow is discreetly collected by the menstrual cup. After removal, it is not thrown away, but emptied, washed and reused.

You can wear a cup for up to 12 hours, as its capacity is significantly larger than that of a conventional tampon.

Cloth pads – soft, washable and uncomplicated

How do washable cloth pads work? In short: Like disposable pads – with the only difference being that instead of an adhesive backing, the pad is fastened to the back of your underwear with a small snap, hook, or Velcro closure. There are also cloth panty liners without a closure that are simply placed inside your underwear or between your labia (vulvar lips). Just like period panties, you wash cloth pads after use and can then reuse them.

Cloth tampons – a new option
A newcomer among reusable period products: cloth tampons offer invisible period protection, just like disposable tampons. The difference is that cloth tampons are rinsed after use and then machine washed. The design is also slightly different, as the small pieces of fabric are rolled up by hand and secured with the sewn-in retrieval string. They can be carried in a small wet bag.

Our femtis period panties also offer great additional protection when used with cloth tampons! Especially with an active lifestyle, you can feel secure and go about your daily life without worry.

Menstrual sponges: A renewable natural product

Menstrual sponges are fine-pored Levantine sponges that you insert into your vagina. These sponges are not plants, but rather single-celled invertebrates. This means that this period product is not suitable for vegans. As a natural product, they can vary in size and shape. The different shapes and sizes have the advantage that the sponges adapt to the shape of your vagina. However, menstrual sponges do have one disadvantage: they are not suitable for heavy periods and should only be used for light to medium flow.
